DC 9500 Series
Society Bands
January 1947
Discography by Jay Bruder
The first two records released on DC by Mrs. Lillian Claiborne and
Haskell Davis were noted in the trade magazines in January and February of 1947.
They featured the local bandleader Tiny Meeker who was frequently employed at
major formal events around Washington to include events at the National Press
Club and at the larger hotels such as the Wardman Park Hotel. This society
music seems to be what Mrs. Claiborne thought was appropriate product for a
respectable record company. It unfortunately had limited sales. The matrix
numbers for these four sides, two of which bear a "USR" prefix, likely
originated from U. S. Recording Studios and are in sequence with a vocal group
record on Wicks 9558/9559. The copyright dates for the songs on the Wicks record
also support a late 1946 release date which allows our key dates to fall neatly
into place. There is no indication of Claiborne-Davis involvement on the Wicks
record. These two DC releases preserve the antiquarian practice of
assigning a different catalog number to each side of the record (in this case
the studio matrix numbers were used). They also used a early and somewhat plain
looking logotype on the label which will be referred to as Label Style I.
